What Duvet Should I Buy?

What Duvet Should I Buy

We often get people asking "Which is the best duvet you sell?"
But really the question should be, "Which is the best duvet for me (and my partner)."

There are a number of things that you need to consider before buying a duvet.

  1. What's your budget?
Decide your budget at outset.  There's no point in looking at Siberian Goose Down duvets at £150+ if you're never going to spend that much on a duvet.
If Siberian Goose Down is your thing then that's what you'll have to pay, but you can still get a great duvet that meets your requirements for much less than half that price.
Down filled duvets are the most expensive, followed by feather and down mix, with synthetic filled duvets at the cheaper end.

  2. How warm do you like to be in bed?
The tog rating on a duvet indicates its ability to trap warm air.  So, the higher the tog rating the warmer the duvet.
COOL (4.5 tog) is the lightest rating and is ideal for Summer use
MEDIUM (9 or 10.5 tog) Suitable for Spring or Autumn but often used all year round
WARM (13.5 tog) perfect for the coldest Winter night and will keep you really cosy.

It's worth noting that natural (feather/down) filled duvets trap heat more efficiently than synthetic ones and need less filling to achieve the same level of warmth.  They are, therefore, often lighter to sleep under.

  3. Natural or Synthetic?
    The differences are as follows:
Natural materials tend to be warmer than synthetic and help skin to breathe better. They retain their ability to trap heat for longer with life expectancies of up to 35 years, if looked after properly.  They also absorb body moisture and release it when aired.  A synthetic duvet will not do this.  Natural filled duvets can achieve the same level of warmth as synthetic duvets with much less filling and are, therefore, lighter.
Synthetic duvets are ideal for allergy sufferers, really easy to launder at home and great if you are on a tight budget. Silk duvets offer the benefits of natural feather or down, whilst also being naturally hypo-allergenic.

  4. Do you suffer from dust or skin allergies?
For allergy sufferers natural filled duvets are usually a no-no.  All our synthetic filled duvets are non-allergenic and are ideal for more frequent washing. Today's synthetic fabrics are designed to be much lighter than in the past and give exceptional loft, drape and recovery.

  5. What size is your bed and existing  linen?
I know it sounds daft to have to say this but consider what size your bed and existing bed linen is before you buy a duvet.
All our duvets are designed to fit standard UK bed sizes.  You may wish to buy a duvet that is one size bigger than your bed to get that cosy and plumped up look, but please remember to make sure that you also have duvet covers in this larger size.

  6. You'll probably need some pillows too.
The chances are if you're considering getting a new duvet then you should probably get some new pillows.  Pillows are just as important for an undisturbed nights’ sleep. The correct firmness will depend on whether you sleep on your side, back or front, while fillings range from down and feather to equally cosy but machine washable hollow-fibre.
If you are looking for a very soft pillow then you should look for micro-fibre or goose down, whilst a duck feather filled or super-bounce will give you a firmer feel with more support.
As with duvets, allergy sufferers should go for synthetic fillings.
